Abstract oil painting the Gingerbread man/lady

Initial thoughts

I love to make gingerbread cookie for my family. I thought about painting it. However, after looking through lots of pictures online, I decided to avoid realistic style for this subject. In my mind, Gingerbread man has the character just like the story “Gingerbread man”. He is naughty and playful. He says “Run, run as fast as you can. You can’t catch me. I am the Gingerbread man”. So I am looking for a way to express this naughty, childish and happy feeling.

Digital sketches

I start to draw some digital sketches. But I don’t like them the next day. It takes some time for me to go completely abstract. The digital sketches are in square shape. But later I decide to go with rectangle shape so I can eliminate some distracted pattern. The surface for this painting is Da Vinci Pro Medium Textured Gesso Panels. Since I have two identical panels on hand, I paint a female version, the Gingerbread lady. They made a couple, I hope. 😀

Summary

In the beginning when I try to draw a gingerbread man, I don’t like the result. Then I have to leave it and let it process like a background program in my brain. After a couple days or weeks, the feeling starts to reveal the picture by itself. Then everything goes more smoothly. Therefore, don’t force it, let it process naturally. The result will show itself eventually. ❤
